Inspiration Behind the Initiative

In today’s digitally driven world, access to technology is no longer a luxury but a necessity. For many youths in Mbare, Harare, the lack of access to digital tools and education has created a significant barrier to opportunities in education, employment, and entrepreneurship. Recognizing this challenge, the Mbare Renewal Projects launched the Computer Lab Project—a bold initiative to bridge the digital divide and empower the community with essential digital skills.

The idea stemmed from a stark realization: most young people and residents in Mbare have little to no exposure to computers or the internet. Without these skills, they face significant hurdles in accessing modern job opportunities or participating in the digital economy. The computer lab is designed to be more than a place with computers; it aims to be a beacon of hope—a vibrant hub for learning, innovation, and economic empowerment.

A Community-Centric Vision

The Mbare computer lab is still under construction, but its potential impact is already shaping conversations within the community. Once operational, the lab will provide free or low-cost access to computers and internet connectivity, making it possible for residents to learn and grow in a supportive environment.

The project’s core mission includes:

  • Providing digital access: Free or affordable use of computers and the internet to reduce financial barriers.

  • Delivering training programs: Workshops on basic computer literacy, online safety, and digital entrepreneurship will equip participants with the tools they need to thrive in a modern economy.

  • Promoting economic empowerment: By fostering job creation and entrepreneurial opportunities, the lab aims to reduce unemployment rates in the area.

  • Bridging the digital divide: The lab prioritizes inclusion, ensuring that marginalized groups, including women and youths, are equipped with digital tools to participate in a connected world.

Christina Gwati, the Public Relations Officer from Mbare Renewal Projects, described the lab’s vision:

“For us, the computer lab is more than just a facility; it is a symbol of hope and transformation. It reflects the power of digital technologies to uplift marginalized communities, giving individuals the tools they need to rewrite their stories.”

Building the Foundation for Change

Although the lab is still in its development phase, its impact is already being felt. By involving local volunteers—including youths who have struggled with substance misuse—the project has created a sense of purpose and community engagement. These volunteers contribute to the lab’s construction and become ambassadors of change, inspired by the project’s promise.

Partnerships with local stakeholders bolster the initiative, providing additional resources and ensuring the lab's sustainability. Awareness campaigns in the area emphasize the importance of digital inclusion and garner community support.

A Vision for the Future

Mbare Renewal Projects envisions the computer lab as the first step in a larger movement. Plans include integrating local schools, businesses, and government agencies to maximize the lab’s reach and effectiveness.

In the long term, the organization aims to establish similar labs in every residential flat in the area, creating a network of accessible digital hubs. These labs would foster not only individual growth but also a culture of creativity, entrepreneurship, and technological advancement within the community. The success of this model could serve as a blueprint for other underprivileged communities across Zimbabwe and beyond.

Beyond the Computer Lab

The Mbare Renewal Projects’ commitment to community development goes beyond digital empowerment. The organization is also spearheading the refurbishment of 58 dilapidated flats, demonstrating a holistic approach to renewal. Together, these initiatives aim to create a sustainable, thriving environment for Mbare residents.

How You Can Help

The Computer Lab Project relies on the support of individuals and organizations to bring its vision to life. While the lab is still under construction, there are numerous ways to contribute:
